Inequality, Market Imperfections, and the Voluntary Provision of Collective Goods.∗

چکیده
We analyze the effect of inequality in the distribution of endowment of private inputs (e.g., land, wealth) that are complementary in production with collective inputs (e.g., contribution to public goods such as irrigation and extraction from common-property resources) on efficiency in a simple class of collective action problems. In an environment where transaction costs prevent the efficient allocation of private inputs across individuals, and the collective inputs are provided in a decentralized manner, we characterize the optimal second-best distribution of the private input. We show that while efficiency increases with greater equality within the group of contributors and non-contributors, in some situations there is an optimal degree of inequality between the groups. ∗We thank Jean-Marie Baland, Abhijit Banerjee, Timothy Besley, Pierre-Andre Chiappori, Avinash Dixit, Paul Seabright, and workshop participants in Chicago, London School of Economics, the Conference on Inequality, Cooperation and Environmental Sustainability at the Santa Fe Institute, 2001, and the NEUDC 2001 Conference at Boston University for helpful comments. Common Goods, Matrix Games and Institutional Response
The provision of common goods poses collective action problems, which may imply that the actors do not provide the good on a voluntary basis. The collective action problem associated with common goods has traditionally been identified as the prisoner’s dilemma. However, the analysis of common goods needs to look more closely at the characteristics of the goods and of the social context of their...

The impact of redistributive policies on voluntary contributions is still not well understood. While a higher level of redistributive taxation decreases the price of voluntary giving, it also changes the income distribution by decreasing income inequality. This paper provides a controlled laboratory experiment to investigate the net impact of the tax rate on public goods provision. The experime...
متن کاملIncome and wealth heterogeneity in the voluntary provision of linear public goods
This paper examines the effect of income and wealth heterogeneity in the voluntary provision of a linear public good. We use models of inequality aversion and altruism to predict behavior in our setting. Our results are not consistent with these models, however; our experimental results suggest that less wealthy subjects give the same absolute amount (and more as a percentage of their income) a...

Inequality and Growth in Rural China: Does Higher Inequality Impede Growth? We explore the relationship between the level of village inequality in 1986, and the subsequent growth of household incomes from 1986 to 1999. Using a detailed householdlevel data set from rural China, we find robust evidence that initial inequality is negatively related to subsequent household income growth. We are abl...

In the current structure of world economy, imports play an important role in the economic development strategy. Although taking the suitable policies for the imports of goods and services is important, but taking the correct strategy is subject to factors affecting imports. In the most of empirical studies, imports are a function of real income and real exchange rate. So, the effect of income i...
